a school set up for one weekend, where the teachers are the residents of the neighborhood who give classes & workshops for the local and general public.
amid crumbling houses & new commercial building projects, hotels converted to businesses, churches set in buildings’ basements, refugees & immigrants’ convenience stores, & courtyards that serve as kindergartens, neve sha’anan contains a trove of knowledge. many communities with their own language and customs find unique ways to share the space and maintain a day to day life in the neighborhood.
for one weekend, neve sha’anan will become a school in which the neighborhood’s residents share their knowledge with the public. metropolis free school will open. the teachers at the school are the neighborhood residents who will give classes, tours, and workshops, on art, culture, education, music, design, cooking & urbanism. the classes held throughout the neighborhood – in private & public spaces, studios and shops, on the street, in cafes, parks, prayer houses, culture centers & apartments – will give an opportunity to share contents, ideas, knowledge & information, creating a new system of free & contemporary learning in the city. the classes are open to all ages. the public is invited to come to the neighborhood & learn.
